Gilt Humidor, England or Continental. 19th c.
A gilt-copper or bronze table box, probably a humidor. The box is assembled from individual pieces, with the body constructed of heavy soldered sheets, and cast baroque-style embellishments secured to the body with pins. A coat of arms flanks either side of the box, the blazon featuring a bear with stars surrounded by sea shells. Chains border the box.
On the lid, a pair of enamel plaques are inserted into a scrollwork frame, each in the shape of pointed flags and depicting a flying fish. They surround a depressed square aperture, intended for adding moisture to the tobacco inside the box.
Marks: Apparently unmarked.
6.25 x 3 x 3.5 in (15.88 x 7.7 x 8.9 cm)
Condition: With rubbing and minor loss of gilt to cast embellishments. Traces of residue.
