Carved Boxwood Snuff Box, Probably Dutch. 18th Century.
This demilune-shaped boxwood snuff box has a number of fanciful elements including a hidden dog inside the silver lined compartment underneath lid. The lid features an unusual optical illusion or double anthropomorphic image of a man's face in profile . When inverterd the pair of rampant lions on either side of the man's visage become legible. Possibly a third image of a horse and or hand is also depicted when the man's face is viewed half way between the other two orientations, although not as obvious as the man's profile. Around the outside of the box is a continuous frieze depicting a hunting scene. Together with the hunter bearing his rifle are twelve carved animals including several deer, boars, a dog, a rabbit, a fox and a squirrel interspersed between plants and trees. Unmarked.
