Small Baroque Wrought Iron Strongbox, 17th Century. Germany.
Small Baroque Wrought Iron Strongbox, 17th Century. Germany.
Featuring wrought-iron banded construction with a hidden keyhole concealed behind a decoy inside the front panel escutcheon. The lid features an iron rosette medallion with three rotating discs of petals that offer a decorative flourish, suggesting the casket, along with its diminutive size and thin carrying handle, may have been a domestic object for storing jewelry. The rosette medallion doubles as a secret latch and when rotated and moved will release a bolt allowing the lid to open. Possible makers marks on either side of the rose medallion
Minor surface rust, no major rust issues. Key a late replacement. Front escutcheon has minor loss around keyhole. Interior lock plate on front face shows signs of wear around keyhole. Lid is snug and top bolt locks securely.
