The lid features an iron rosette medallion with three rotating discs of petals that offer a decorative flourish, suggesting the casket, along with its diminutive size and thin carrying handle, may have been a domestic object for storing jewelry. The rosette medallion doubles as a secret latch and when rotated and moved will release a bolt allowing the lid to open. Possible makers marks on either side of the rose medallion
