Lignum vitae Sander, America or England. 18-19th Century.
Lathe turned cup used as a sander or "pounce pot" used for holding powdered cuttlefish bone or sand for blotting ink and preparing parchment for writing. Made of turned lignum vitae. Label on base identifying it as being used in the House of Representatives in Augusta Maine by a William (?) Waterhouse, an ancestor of one Lucille Taylor.
